The D5300 offers wide-area AF coverage and high-density focus points including 9 cross-type sensor in the center area, helping you master most focusing situations with a variety of autofocus options.
Selectable AF-area modes according to the subject in optical viewfinder shooting:
In order to adapt to your subject matter, the D5300 offers four AF-area modes. You can choose how the focus point for autofocus is selected during viewfinder shooting.
- Single-point AF mode
This mode is ideal for stationary subjects such as flowers, still lifes and portraits. Focus and compose precisely by selecting one of the 39 focus points.
- Dynamic-area AF mode
Suitable for capturing subjects that move quickly and erratically. Select one of the 39 focus points. If the subject briefly leaves the selected focus point, the camera will focus based on information from the surrounding points. Selectable when focus mode is set to AF-A or AF-C.
- 3D-tracking mode
Suitable for shooting a moving subject. Pursues your subject using all 39 focus points. Once focusing is achieved with a selected focus point, the focus point automatically changes to track the subject according to its movement while the shutter-release button is pressed halfway. Selectable when focus mode is set to AF-A or AF-C.
- Auto-area AF mode
The D5300 detects the main subject using all 39 focus points and automatically focuses on it. The camera can recognize human skin tones using the Scene Recognition System's subject identification algorithms for improved human subject acquisition.
High-precision Scene Recognition System with 2016-pixel RGB sensor for finer subject analysis:
When taking pictures, you can be sure that the D5300 will adapt to diverse shooting or lighting situations. Its incredibly accurate 2016-pixel RGB sensor collects brightness and color data that Nikon's exclusive Scene Recognition System analyzes meticulously. Everything in your shot is then used to calculate the precise available light exposure, flash exposure, autofocus and white balance -- all measured before releasing the shutter.
Freeze the moment with 5 fps:
Even when shooting sports scenes or other fast-moving subjects, the D5300 can easily and accurately capture the action. Its high-speed continuous shooting at approx. 5 fps delivers more opportunities to catch the right movement or expression. The number of shots in continuous shooting is up to 100 frames. You can also select continuous low-speed release mode at approx. 3 fps for natural portrait shooting.
Accurate light source identification with Auto white balance:
Thanks to the new EXPEED 4 image-processing engine, the D5300 achieves more accurate white balance. The camera utilizes color and brightness information of the shooting scenes acquired by light source identification of the Scene Recognition System for auto white balance. It identifies the light source by referencing the in-camera database for auto white balance. In this way, it can determine the ideal white balance even with difficult light sources.
Unique angles make exceptional pictures:
Sometimes the best angle for a picture may not be at eye level, but with most cameras or smart devices it is difficult to compose from a high or low perspective. For truly unique points of view, try the D5300's vari-angle LCD monitor. The wide 8.1-cm/3.2-in., approx. 1037k-dot super-sharp and bright LCD monitor opens horizontally from 0° to 180° and can flip up and down from +180° to -90°. Now it's just as easy to shoot above a crowd as it is to compose close to ground level, while still viewing the full image displayed across the entire screen.
Seamless autofocus performance in live view:
The D5300 boasts improved autofocus performance for both live view shooting and video recording. The improved subject-tracking AF and full-time-servo AF (AF-F) keep your subjects in sharp focus as they move. Face-priority AF is also available. In combination with NIKKOR lenses, the D5300 delivers fast, accurate autofocus during video shooting.
Three servo modes -- selectable focusing that suits your subject:

- Manual focus (MF)
Suitable for subjects that are usually difficult for autofocus systems to handle, such as an animal in a cage or a person in the shade with the sun in the background.
Four AF-area modes in live view -- selectable according to your subject:
- Face-priority AF
Suitable for focusing on someone's face such as for a commemorative photo.
- Wide-area AF
Suitable for handheld shooting such as for a landscape. The focus point can be moved to a desired point within the frame.
- Normal-area AF
Convenient for pinpoint focus, such as when shooting a close-up of a flower or other small subjects. Using a tripod is recommended for more precise focusing.
- Subject-tracking AF
After focusing is activated, the focus point tracks the subject automatically. Suitable for moving subjects such as children or pets.
Wide full-image display:
Taking advantage of the D5300's wide 8.1-cm/3.2-in., approx. 1037-k LCD monitor, the aspect ratio has been changed from 4:3 to 3:2, enabling the whole area of pictures and movies to be shown on the screen so that you can check the details from edge to edge.
Capture life's movement easily:
Leave the camcorder at home. The D5300 is also a high-performance video camera capable of Full HD D-Movies at 1920 x 1080 that are compatible with 60p/50p. That means you get smooth, fluid recording, even with fast-moving subjects. The CMOS image sensor with 24.2 effective megapixels and the EXPEED 4 image-processing engine work together to deliver sharp movie images with low noise in any light. An authentic D-SLR design makes it easy to grip the camera and position yourself securely during handheld shooting, while the new wide vari-angle LCD monitor provides a larger image for comfortable viewing. Steady handheld shooting, minimized camera shake and a wide array of sharp, dependable NIKKOR lenses give you the recipe for unique movies -- even if you have limited or no experience. If you want to do more, the D5300's in-camera effects can give your movies a fun and creative look, while the easy-to-use in-camera editing features then help you to create clips, short films or any other creative works by combining your movies and still images.
High-fidelity audio control and built-in stereo microphone:
Audio quality makes a huge difference in the way a video is received. For optimum impact, the D5300 has a built-in stereo microphone that can be controlled automatically, or manually in 20 incremental steps. Audio levels can be easily confirmed visually on the 16 x 9 LCD monitor both before and during video shooting for comfortable control.
Best options for quieter movie shooting:
An ideal lens for the D5300. Its quiet operational sound makes video recording more effective, while its powerful Vibration Reduction (VR) enables handheld movie recording without worrying about camera shake.

Type C mini-pin HDMI cable (available separately) is required for playback.
For unique images and videos:
Get more creative and enhance your pictures and movies with nine easy-to-use Special Effects. Try the new HDR Painting or Toy Camera effect features to give your images a bold, artistic touch. You can even check how the effect looks in real time on the live view monitor before you shoot.
Night vision, Color sketch, Toy Camera effect, Miniature effect, Selective color, Silhouette, High key, Low key, and HDR painting.
- HDR painting
Each time a photo is taken, the camera shoots two frames at different exposures and combines them for a painterly effect that emphasizes detail and color.
- Toy Camera effect
Create photos and movies that appear to have been shot with a toy camera. The effect can be adjusted in live view. Adjustable parameters: vignetting (3 steps) and saturation (3 steps).
- Miniature effect
Create photos that appear to be pictures of dioramas. Works best when shooting from a high vantage point.
- Selective Color
Emphasize up to three colors while the rest are rendered in black and white. The color range can be adjusted in values from 1 to 7.
Create dramatic images with silhouettes of subjects against bright backgrounds.
Delivers beautiful images even in high-contrast scenes-HDR (High Dynamic Range):
Two images taken with one shutter release at varying exposure are combined to produce a single image that has a wider dynamic range (range of contrast to reproduce tonal gradation) with less loss of detail in highlights and shadows. The result is images with less noise and rich tonal gradation throughout the entire frame including shadows and highlights even in high-contrast shooting scenes. HDR mode is selectable from "auto", "extra high", "high", "normal", "low" and "off". The exposure differential of the two images up to 3 EV and the smoothness of the edge where the two exposures meet are automatically set according to the strength level. Effective for stationary subjects such as landscapes or still life.
Enjoy editing pictures after shooting:
The D5300 is equipped with a number of in-camera editing functions that make image retouching easy. This includes a newly developed D-lighting feature, "Portrait subjects," which enhances the exposure human subjects while retaining the natural ambience of a low-lit background.
Reproduces brightness and shadowy areas as you see them:
Active D-Lighting is effective for shooting, for example, a dark room including outside scenery seen through a window, high-contrast scenes such as at the seaside under strong sunlight, and backlit situations. It preserves details in both highlights and shadowy areas in such situations, maintaining moderate contrast to reproduce brightness as you see it. Select the preferred setting from "auto", "extra high", "high", "normal", "low" or "off". The D5300 employs an image-processing system that causes less shift of color even when the strength level is increased. Unlike HDR (High Dynamic Range), Active D-Lighting does not require the process of combining images, therefore it is effective for shooting moving subjects such as people.
